Scrap Metal: Cutlery and Collective Memory

Project details

Programme
Tutor Edwina Attlee

Scrap Metal: Cutlery and Collective Memory unveils the living histories and material cultures of Sheffield's metalworking communities. Situated within the temporal and transitional topographies of Sheffield, the project explores the shifting trajectories of the city's inhabitants during a period of deindustrialisation.

Oral history methods were employed, inviting community members to contribute their life stories documented within the artist's book. These oral histories, collected in the narrators' homes, provide a glimpse into the past, revealing the often-veiled overlaps of the public and private spheres in the city's transitional history.

Complementing the book is an installation piece inspired by Alison Marchant's piece ‘Treading the Traces of Discarded History’. Audiences encounter an audio-visual experience introducing three narrators and their stories through a short film projected onto a dining table. The film seamlessly weaves together audio testimonials from the artist's book with archive footage of Sheffield's steel industry, capturing its most visceral essence — molten and glowing.
