A monument is a moment of stasis in a society always in flux. This contradiction is addressed by visualising individual’s right to self-expression.
Inspired by the ‘non-finito’ sculpting technique, the project conceptualises a monument as a developing process instead of a finished result. The project sets up an interactive living monument approach that the audience can control and challenge. The audiences contribute to the sculpture design by rearranging and highlighting different monument fragments. The monument is reframed through a constant process captured and presented in a monumental format.
monumental? aims to stimulate public discourse over monuments’ inherited agendas, to disrupt and reinterpret existing monuments, and to reflect and suggest new narratives around them.
While the presence of monuments may appear paradoxical in the context of the promised freedom of speech, they are deeply entrenched traditions that are unlikely to be discarded due to the resistance to change within our established systems. The project’s focus is therefore on mitigating this inherent bias and striving for a more balanced and inclusive revaluation of the role of monuments in society.
