Zero Sum

Project details

Student Runjia Mao
Programme

In the context of a society in which narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is increasing, Zero Sum explores the application of artificial intelligence technology to the design of an interactive film that critically reflects on the impact of NPD in human relationships.

The film is designed as a branching narrative, employing characters jointly constructed using digital humans. The project uses facial expression recognition to establish a connection between viewer and protagonist. Viewer expressions are recognised at key moments and an expressed emotion determines how the movie progresses. Viewers are no longer passive observers but become emotionally involved in and drive the unfolding narrative. By simulating the experience of being in a relationship with an NPD individual, viewers are given a first-hand perspective of the challenges and intricacies involved in interactions. Zero Sum aims to empower viewers to cultivate self-protection by leveraging the impact of ‘uncomfortable experiences’, allowing them to reflect on and construct effective self-protection and safeguard their emotional wellbeing.
