Moonlit Windows

Project details

Student Xiruo Wang
Programme

Legend has it that in the 17th century an Italian Jesuit missionary braved numerous challenges to carry out the Church's mission in the rumoured magnificent Eastern Kingdom — China. He immersed himself in the study of both Chinese and Manchu, seeking to understand Chinese culture and assisting the Church in projecting an image of a sacred and advanced Eastern land in Europe. In a southern Chinese ancient city, this foreigner deciphered Chinese and Manchu through observation and listening, bearing witness to the most authentic China, untouched by the west’s Orientalist aesthetic interpretation.

Moonlit Windows is a virtual reality game that provides players with a puzzle-solving experience. Players delve into the missionary’s travel diary. As they enter a virtual world shaped by European interpretations of China, they critically examine romantic and imaginary European views of Eastern culture. Players enter the game through moonlit windows, discovering clues, gradually unveiling the story of the missionary's travels, and gaining glimpses of a different China.
