Robotic Weaving

Project details

Programme

Ancient weaving technology has witnessed human development, and the multi-dimensional weaving derived from it has played a pivotal role in the development of the automation industry.

After understanding the characteristics of pistons and electromagnets, the team integrated them to design an end effector capable of meeting the requirements for robotic arm weaving. Modern manufacturing technology using a robotic arm was applied to traditional weaving technique under the control of a computer.

The design is presented through the end effector of the robotic arm, the weaving language and the weaving frame. The end effector can produce three-dimensional, multi-layers and standardised woven parts with different densities. It also enables us to explore the possibility of modular vertical weaving connections, expanding the potential of multi-dimensional weaving beyond the traditional textile industry. The robotic arm language adapted to the end effector makes the entire weaving process more standardised. The produced components can be sequentially removed from the frame and re-spliced horizontally to form movable walls, suspended ceilings, canopies and other applications.

Multi-Dimensional Weaving

Multi-Dimensional Weaving

The woven body integrated by more dimensions and materials can present a multi-functional integrated space compared with a single combined woven body.

Mechanical Arm and End Effector

Mechanical Arm and End Effector

This project collaborates with a flexible and easy-to-operate UR10 robotic arm. An end effector is then designed to achieve multi-dimensional weaving.

Weaving Connection

Weaving Connection

A robotic arm is hand-simulated to complete woven productions of different shapes, exploring different weaving connections across two to three layers.

Construction of Final Project

Construction of Final Project

The final project consists of several two and three layers of woven parts. A second weaving is interspersed with two layers on the basic of their foundation weavings. The density of each woven parts is influenced by their different weaving ways.

Weaving Process

Weaving Process

The robotic arm weaves in perfect coordination with the piston and the electromagnet, creating a process that resembles playing a music piece. It is presented as a black and white drama, so that the viewer can feel the beauty of its rhythm.
