Waste Agency involves the creation of a site-specific and socially-engaged screenplay for a stop-motion animation. The animation consists of two parts: 'Chairs’ Mate' and 'Table Talks'. It also includes a live performance with an in-situ installation. The main objective of the project is to empower non-humans and challenge the value judgement placed on material possessions in a consumerist society through a humorous and playful approach. The film features local found objects represented by downscaled models made from reused materials and depicts their life journey in the background of an ordinary scene in Shoreditch.
Today, Shoreditch is part of central London but still maintains its wild, casual, and intense character. Waste accumulates in specific corners of the neighbourhood, where the energy of creativity and imagination fuels the project.
The performance involves using obsolete objects found around the neighbourhood. Similar to how a spider weaves its nest using elements found in its surroundings, the artist uses in-situ elements to create the artwork.
By projecting the animation back to the site where the story developed, the project gives voice to local communities through the reanimation of their discarded objects, creating transient messages that form a 'mirage' - a daydream, a fiction.
By experimenting with different methodologies to "reanimate" these forgotten objects, the artist/dramaturgist gradually develops her own unique visual language. This language involves a weaving together of reality and fantasy.
Following the live performance by the character Terry the table, the debut screening of both animations allowed audiences to establish a connection with the local objects and the site.
