In legend, there is a place called the Underworld, which is the final destination for the souls of the deceased. When people depart from the mortal world, their souls will pass through the gates of the Underworld and enter this realm. This belief is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, and people express their thoughts and reverence for their deceased loved ones through rituals such as burning paper offerings and ancestor worship. These practices mean communication between the world of the living and that of the dead is ongoing.
This project explores this connection from the perspective of Betty, a young girl who is new to the Underworld. Aa theatrical stage based on the descriptions of death and the afterlife in Chinese culture, as well as drawing from the author’s own personal experiences was created. As Betty moves through the story in this stage, the journey of individuals from the real world to death is played out, establishing connections with the physical world. Those who have experienced, are experiencing or will experience death are provided with an alternative way of looking at it. Death is not the end of life; rather, it signifies existence in another world.
