The work discusses a personal project aimed at addressing insomnia through a unique blend of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) and sewing. The author, an insomniac, documents the struggle with sleeplessness and seeks redemption by inviting others to participate in the project. By focusing on the bedroom as the project site, the author emphasizes its universality and relevance to sleep and insomnia. The project involves collecting and analysing data on insomnia and sharing methods of alleviation, especially sewing during CBT-I, which helps dispel negative emotions. The intervention allows for community building among insomniacs, sharing experiences and support. The results are compiled into an artist’s book, showcasing the materials and stories behind the sewn words related to insomnia. The author aims to show that dealing with insomnia involves active lifestyle adjustments and finding solace amid difficulties, promoting self-reconciliation.
As a chronic insomniac, what the author does during insomnia has become a part of their record-keeping. Drawing the floor plan of their bedroom on a piece of fabric, and on various locations of the floor plan, record their insomnia activities.
Since February 2023, the author has been collecting their sleep data and writing an insomnia diary, a habit which helps better control their condition, and change their strategies for alleviating insomnia based on the data collection.
Throughout the summer of 2023, the author hosted several workshops about insomnia. Other individuals who suffer from insomnia were invited to participate. All shared their experiences and discussed various methods to alleviate it.
The author collects and documents the process and outcomes — videos, sewn fabrics, and the stories behind insomnia. Intervention is an indispensable part of this project, offering a platform for sharing insights and methods for managing insomnia.
This book involves 24 insomniacs. For these patients, the author shares methods to alleviate insomnia, encouraging them to try and explore together and to gather materials related to insomnia. Sewing has been combined with CBT-I therapy.
