Project details

Programme

L U D D I T E S is a choreographic performance installation that centres on human-machine relations. The project delves into the complex interdependence between organic and prosthetic bodies, exploring the tension between preserving human agency and the collaborative potential within mechanical movement systems. The core concept draws inspiration from the Luddites, a 19th century socio-cultural movement that resisted the rise of the machines at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Drawing on a Victorian imagination of the broken machine, the project acts both as a metaphor for advanced technology, and an exploration of the boundary of self-autonomy in the contemporary city.

The installation uses mechanical linkage structures and wearable layers as extended bodily media. Performers engage in a self-feedback loop system, discovering the capabilities and constraints of their temporary prostheses as they attempt to navigate the physical environment. Choreography becomes an emergent process where degrees of freedom are negotiated between human kinetics, mechanical systems, and public space. The project questions ableist narratives and the ethics of human-machine integration.
