Identiscentory –Sonic– is a site-specific installation that uses scent and sound to bridge individual experience and collective memory. The project explores how personal narratives are perceived through sensory experience and affected by layers of translation and spatialisation.
Participants are given a scent sample which acts as a catalyst to elicit and capture spoken memories. Through a process of inter-semiotic translation, an AI analyses the textual content of the narrative and generates customised music which is then modulated based on the sonic characteristics of the voice. As participants move around the installation the original narrative mixes dynamically with the generated music based on their position in space, allowing them to experience the source and translation simultaneously.
Whether natural or constructed, each locale possesses distinct scents capable of evoking memories. Similarly, each participant brings their own identity, experience, and cultural background. The dual experiences offered by Identiscentory –Sonic– enable audiences to share their narratives while simultaneously engaging with a sea of collective memory, all originating from one scent.
