The Tracing Line redesigns a secret female Nushu ritual. Jie Laotong, is a 19th century befriending ritual for women in the Hunan Province in China. Women would partake in the ritual to become sisters who helped and provided emotional support to one another throughout their lives. The ritual involved the use of a female-specific language, Nushu.
In the project, the long, thin, linear typeface of the Nushu script is represented by a tracing line. The goal of the work is to bring attention to the culture’s sophisticated and mysterious feminism, as well as to the injustice of women's social and educational status in traditional society.
The project combines a physical installation with immersive, spatial projections and virtual reality environments. Two participants take a ritualistic journey together, where they first become paired and then celebrate their connection by engaging in the act of writing the female-specific language to experience and commemorate the ancient Nushu culture.
