Ceramic Assemblies & VAF

Project details

Programme

Architectural heritage is a special language which records the course of civilization of the city. This study establishes a method for developing and sharing value assumptions within the design and ‘re-manufacturing’ of existing buildings.

A written pamphlet, titled the Value Assessment Framework (VAF) was produced which provides a guideline for practitioners and manufacturers to establish and share their value assessments to better understand how best to engage with our built heritage.

This is then applied through a case study project sited at the House of Annetta – a social systems-focused platform based in the Georgian house of Annetta Pedretti, on Princelet Street, Shoreditch. Through collaborative brief writing, a prototype for a ceramic screen is developed that would allow the House of Annetta to subdivide its existing space into more usable divisions and provide a much-needed sense of comfort.

The Value Assessment Framework enables a comprehensive evaluation of a building or structure. It identifies the role and impact of the different values of a building or structure, allowing for a shared approach to design development.

Form Development

Form Development

The design started from the marquetry pattern produced by Annetta, integrating parametric and 3D software tools to preserve and extend its cultural value. Patterns extracted from her marquetry are used to create a 3D modular structure.

Through multiple ceramic slip-casting experiments, it has been observed that the key factors affecting the control of ceramic thickness in slip-casting are casting time and casting frequency.
