Adaptable Re-use: Dynamic Joining Systems for Waste Timber

Project details

Programme

Construction is the most resource-intensive sector in the world. It consumes more than half of global resources; it is responsible for more than a third of the global energy use and associated emissions and generates the most significant and voluminous waste stream globally.

Faced with the practical difficulties of re-using of wood, this project proposes a universal and adjustable timber connector to increase the possibilities for waste timber, and to improve the continuing adaptability of timber structures.

Students

3D Dynamic Joint

3D Dynamic Joint

Four joint types were developed, each allowing for varying degrees of freedom.

Angle Control and Tension System

Angle Control and Tension System

The tension system assumes the responsibility of angle control in 3D dynamic joints.

Installation and Dismantling

Installation and Dismantling

An adjustive length regulation system. It allows for quick and easy angle changes and mounting and dismounting of the overall structure.

Adaptable Tables

Adaptable Tables

The project uses the four new types of connectors mentioned above to assemble a table capable of changing its shape, which also has a certain degree of functionality.

Manufacturing and Assembly Process
